Many teachers enter their students for graded examinations with one of the various examining boards. These exams are not essential, however they can provide the motivation towards realsitic goals and be rewarded for their achievements. Your child will be guided by their teachers as to whether an exam should be taken and which grade should be attempted. Once a recommendation has been made by the teacher, we will contact you asking for your consent. Only then will an exam entry be made.
Students are required to take some training approximately 2 months before an exam. These are available at an additional fee.
All candidates (with the exception of pianists) will require an accompanist in the examination, for which there is a fee. The fee covers 2 rehearsals and the exam time itself. Some individual Music Teachers like to accompany their own pupils or we can arrange the services of an official school accompanist. Music for higher grades deman considerably more practice and therefore require a longer period of rehearsal. This will be reflected in the fee.
The Performing Arts Department holds 1 exam session per year with the Associated Board (ABRSM). This session is normally held in May. For exams with other examining boards, please liaise directly with your child's teacher, or email us for more information. Theory exams take place seperately to practical exams and take place in November, March and June. Students will be directed by our theory teacher as to when an exam should be taken. Entries will take place through the Performing arts Department.
