Waterloo Sunset Analysis

22 Sep 2014

Hi all,

Apologies for not being in - not very well at the moment.  In the meantime, I would like you to carry on with the Waterloo Sunset analysis by yourselves.

Here's what you need to do if you haven't done so already:
  • Have the structure (intro, verse, middle 8, etc) annotated on your scores.
  • Also have the hook and turnaround ideas annotated.
Through analysising your score, answer and annotate the following:
  • What key does the Middle 8 modulate to?  What key is this in relation to the home key?
  • What is a pedal point?  Find two examples of this on the score.  What do you notice about both pedal points?
  • The hook at the verse (bars 8-9) is a 5 note cell - Csharp, B, E, Csharp, B.  Look at the interval pattern.
    • How does this hook pattern develop in the second phrase?
  • Comment on the melodic line in the Middle 8.  How does it compare to the melody line in the verses?
  • Comment on the texture of the piece.
  • On the recording the vocals have been double tracked.  Research what double tracking is.
Your next lesson with me is this Friday (26th September).  Have everything above annotated/highlighted on your scores before that lesson.  I will coming round to check that each of you have done this!

See you Friday!

Mr O'Sullivan
